The School for Moral Ambition (SMA) is a new organisation that will focus on attracting the most talented people to work on the most pressing issues of our time. The activities of SMA fall into the following categories:

  • Book and Branding: Launch of Rutger Bregman’s book on the topic of moral ambition - the idea that people’s talents should be used for working on global challenges. Launch of a corresponding campaign to establish a prestigious brand that attracts talent and sparks a movement around moral ambition.
  • Community Activities: We will organise Moral Ambition Circles and offer the resources to start their own Circle. These circles help morally ambitious people develop a career that matches their ideals.
  • Exclusive Fellowship Programs: Initiation of targeted, highly selective programs in which small groups of fellows (~12 people) will focus on solving one of the most pressing and neglected global problems together.

about the role

The School for Moral Ambition is a non-profit startup with fast scaling potential. As a strategy professional, you can help us scale our impact in a financially responsible way.

We have launched a strategic project to investigate which new initiatives could be launched that are fully aligned with SMA’s mission and also have the potential to generate revenues, in order to become less dependent on philanthropy only. You will play a leading role in building high-level business plans for these new initiatives.

On a daily basis, you will collaborate with SMA’s Business Model lead. In addition, you’ll be engaging with many internal and external stakeholders to develop this strategy.

Key responsibilities

  • Screening of initiatives: you will evaluate all sorts of new identified initiatives against clearly defined criteria to arrive at a shortist
  • Business model creation: you will build high-level business models for each of the selected initiatives by engaging with experts, collecting data, defining action plans and estimating expected impact, cost and revenues
  • Presentation: you will summarise your findings in compelling presentation materials to be shared internally with the management team and the board as well as externally with other stakeholders in the initiatives

What We’re looking for

You might be an especially good fit if you have:

  • Passion for the concept of moral ambition
  • Proven (>3 years) experience as a strategy professional. This can be as a management consultant, or a comparable function elsewhere.
  • Start-up mindset: you know what an organisation in this phase needs, or are eager to find out.
  • Strategic thinker: you contribute to our overall strategic planning and provide insights of financial sustainability and growth.
  • Effective and direct communication: you present information in an understandable way and easily translate ideas, concepts and calculations into presentations.
  • Proactive and solution oriented: you like to think three steps ahead and are eager to point out potential problems and generate solutions before they arise.
  • Teamplayer: you place group results over your individual performance and make time to invest in the learning and growth of your colleagues. When difficulties arise in collaboration, you choose courage over comfort.

We are committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment. We welcome applicants of all races, religions, gender identities, sexual orientations, ages, national origins, disabilities, and other diverse backgrounds. At the School for Moral Ambition, we value talent and a can-do attitude above traditional credentials.

What we offer

  • A nice office with shared lunch to work from
  • A team that cares for each other and is exceptionally passionate about improving the world
  • Being part of a starting organisation with global impact potential. You can help make it happen.
  • Growth opportunities: we are an ambitious team that expects a steep growth trajectory and geographical expansion which means you could grow with us

Application process

  1. Application form: To get started, please fill the application form before April 28th.
  2. Interview: We’ll invite shortlisted candidates to a 45 minute interview with the Business Models lead and one of the SMA directors, where we’ll ask a combination of situational judgement and experience-based questions, and open up time to discuss the role in more detail.

Expected duration of this application process: maximum 4 weeks from job closing date. We will be flexible regarding the procedure for some specifically qualified applicants.
